Domain Name Parking Explained
Domain parking is an advertising practice used primarily by domain name registrars and internet advertising publishers to monetize type-in traffic visiting an under-developed domain name. The domain name will usually resolve to a page containing advertising listings and links. These links will be targeted to the predicted interests of the visitor and may change dynamically based on the results that visitors click on. Usually the domain owner is paid based on how many links have been visited (e.g. pay per click) and on how beneficial those visits have been. The keywords for any given domain name provide clues as to the intent of the visitor before arriving.
Another use of domain parking is to be a placeholder of an existing web site. A company might choose to use this method to redirect its website traffic to another website it owns.
Expired domains that were formerly websites are also sought after for domain parking. A domain that was used as a website and is allowed to expire will still maintain most of its prior inbound links. These types of domains usually attract their largest amount of visitor traffic initially after being claimed from the domain drop lists. As website operators and search engines begin to remove the former inbound links, the traffic to the parked domain will begin to decline.
Domain parking can be classified as monetized and non-monetized. In the former, ads are shown to visitors and the domain is 'monetized'. In the latter, an "Under Construction" or a "Coming Soon" message is put up on the domain. This a single page web site that people see when they type the domain name in a web browser. This is one quick way for getting an Internet presence. Domain names can be parked before a web site is ready for launching.
There are several companies that actively cater to domain name owners and act as middlemen to serve advertisements on parking pages. The parking pages are propagated automatically on a domain owner's web property when they either change the name servers or forward the URL.
What Is Domain Parking?Domain name parking allows web publishers and domain registrars to place contextual advertisements on under developed domains. This practice is used to further monetize domain name traffic by both registrars and domain name owners. Visitor traffic can come from a number of various sources which are explained below.
Type In TrafficType in traffic is generated when a web surfers types in the address of a “presumed website” such as coffee.com, car.com or auto.com. Type in domain traffic is the most valuable as their is no dependence on search engine traffic. These types of premium domains are extremely valuable and are often sold for millions of dollars.
Expired Domain TrafficExpired domain traffic is generated when a former website domain name expires. These “former website domains” often have old pages listed in search engines as well as inbound links pointing to the domain on related websites. These links and search engine listings can drive traffic over a period of time.
Domaining - Making Money With Parked Domains & Domain ResaleOver the last ten years thousands of individuals know as “domainers” have invested in premium domain names. Understanding the value in these names these individuals have purchased hundreds (even thousands) of domains with the intention of resale. Today the resale market (also called the secondary market) is as hot as ever. Companies like Sedo, NameBay and BuyDomains act as middle men between buyers and sellers and will also “park” your domain while you wait for a sale.
Today many domainers hope to sell their domains at a premium price while others will simply monetize and earn with paid parking. Which ever path you choose you will still want to park your domains initially prior to a sale.
Don't leave your domains dormant... Park them for profit. The internet abounds with a lot of money making opportunities. Among these is the profitable business of domain name selling. This works when one gets a sellable domain name registered and tries to get a buyer for it. The concept of domain name selling is profitable if you know how to get marketable names and promote them. While the business of domain name selling has caught on and a lot of people are getting involved, some have still not noticed the equally profitable business of domain parking. Domain parking helps you profit from your domains before you get to sell them. Instead of keeping the domain idle, you can monetize them by strategically parking them and getting them to generate income for you.
The term Domain Parking describes a method of advertising used by owners of domains and other online advertising publishers to make money from type in traffic that might end up at a yet to be developed domain page. It has become noticed that a lot of internet users do not always use search engines. They just type in thought out domain names relating to the kind of site they wish to visit. For example someone looking for a site about fresh oranges may choose not to use a search engine but simply type in freshoranges.com or naturaloranges.com with the hope that there is a site with such a URL address. If such a domain is parked, the visitor would be directed to a site page containing advertised links and advertised site listings. These links are automatically generated based on the interest of the visitor. As links are clicked, the advertised links displayed would automatically continue to change, based on related results. The links or advertised listings displayed are all paid for so, the owner of the parked domain gets a certain percentage on the revenue from such adverts. The revenue derivable is dependant on the number of advert links clicked on his parked domain page and on the value of such clicks.
Domain parking could be either monetized or non-monetized. Non-monetized domain names that are parked would usually have signs such as “under construction” or “coming soon” put up on the page. This is usually done to secure a web presence before a website is constructed. Monetized domain name parking would contain adverts that would be able to generate an income for the owners. Companies could equally choose to monetize their domains before a site is constructed. Some companies might also park domains to redirect people to an already existing site. The parked domains are used as placeholders of other already constructed website.
Expired domains also form a very lucrative way to generate revenue from parked domains. Domains that were formerly operational sites would likely still receive a considerable number of visitors and would still haves a number of inbound links. So the period immediately after the domain is clamped down is likely to be quite profitable, as it would still receive a lot of traffic thus increasing likely revenue that can be had from parking such domains.
Domains can be parked using one-click or two-click implementation. Domains that operate on one-click generate target adverts based on domain names while domains implementing two-click requires a click on keywords or a search for keywords to generate adverts. To be able to make income from domain parking you need to park your domain names with a domain parking sites. These act as middle men and offer a number of advantages. For one, they would help you design your domain page and would be responsible for updating the adverts on the page. When you want to park your domains all you have to do is register with one such company and either forward the URL or change the DNS servers and keep minting money.
